Spiti Valley
Road Trip

Shimla to Chandratal via Kaza. Ancient monasteries, sand-colored cliffs, and the most surreal cold desert in India. This is the road less traveled.

The Spiti Valley Road Trip — India’s Most Raw Adventure

Spiti Valley sits at the intersection of Himachal Pradesh and Tibet — culturally Tibetan, politically Indian, geographically Martian. The Spiti River has spent millions of years carving through rock, leaving behind a landscape of terracotta cliffs, blue-skied emptiness, and scattered settlements that have existed here for thousands of years. The word “Spiti” means “the middle land” — between India and Tibet — and that ambiguity permeates everything here.

The Shimla–Kaza–Chandratal–Manali circuit is the full Spiti experience — a 9-day loop that takes you from colonial Shimla through the dramatic Kinnaur gorges, into the cold desert of Spiti Valley, up to 11th-century Key Monastery, through the world’s highest inhabited villages at Komik and Kibber, and then to the crescendo: Chandratal Lake at 4,300m, whose waters glow as if lit from within.
